Formula 1 is set to return to Africa, with Rwanda reportedly reaching an agreement to host a Grand Prix targeted for 2030. A race that year would mark 37 years since the championship’s last African round at Kyalami, South Africa, in 1993.

AFP reported on October 8, 2026, that sources in Rwanda’s government and close to the FIA said an agreement had been reached. According to the report, a formal announcement is expected in Kigali the following week.

A New Circuit Near Kigali

The proposed race would take place at a purpose-built permanent circuit near Bugesera International Airport, approximately 40 kilometers from Kigali.

The circuit design has been attributed to WurzDesign, the company founded by former Formula 1 driver Alexander Wurz. Current reporting identifies 2030 as the target debut year, with the formal announcement expected to clarify the project’s timing and arrangements.

A Return to Africa’s Racing History

Formula 1’s return would open a new chapter in the continent’s motorsport history. South Africa previously hosted World Championship Grands Prix, with Kyalami staging the most recent African round in 1993.

South African proposals involving Kyalami and Cape Town have also pursued hosting opportunities, while interest from Nigeria has been reported. Rwanda’s progress comes amid broader ambitions to restore Africa’s place on the international racing calendar.

Lewis Hamilton’s Longstanding Advocacy

Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton has repeatedly called for Formula 1 to return to Africa and publicly supported Rwanda’s ambitions. His advocacy has helped keep African audiences and the continent’s place in the sport in the spotlight.

The Next Chapter

Attention now turns to the anticipated announcement and further details about the circuit and preparations.

For fans across Africa, the development brings renewed excitement—and an opportunity for new audiences to discover how Grand Prix racing works, explore its history, and prepare to experience the sport.

Lights out.
